By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A 21-year-old woman in El Salvador has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for aggravated homicide, the Daily Mail reports.
Salvadoran authorities are accusing her of killing her baby girl after giving birth and those defending her say she suffered a miscarriage.
Citizen Group for the Decriminalization of Abortion, a non-governmental organization defending her said that Lesly Ramirez was at home on June 17, 2020, when she felt an urge to use the bathroom.
At the time, Ramirez was 19 years old and 5 months pregnant. She says that she went to the outhouse and felt something come out of her since she reportedly delivered the child.
In addition, officials from the organization say that Ramirez tried to cut the umbilical cord herself after the miscarriage but it was dark.
However, authorities say that after having the baby, she stabbed it in the neck six times, Reuters report.
After she was taken to the hospital, she was placed in pre-trial detention.
And, last week, she was sentenced to 50 years in prison over the death of her daughter.
The sentencing prompted abortion-supported protests in El Salvador and the organization defending Ramirez’s plans to appeal the verdict.
In the Central American nation, anti-abortion laws ban all forms of termination including if the pregnancy poses a risk to the mother’s life or results from rape or incest.
