By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Football Federation of Belize (FFB) had a ceremony on Thursday in which it recognized 16 football players, both young men, and women, who have received football scholarships to study in the United States of America starting in the new school year.

“The Football Federation of Belize celebrated a historical milestone as 16 athletes head to the USA on athletic scholarships!!” said the FFB in a social media post after live streaming the event on social media.

Players like Kaite Jones, Jayda Brown, Shante Chacon, and Ashley Rodriguez of the Belize National Women’s Team and Jovaun Ramos, Donell Arzu, Jonard Castillo, Wilfredo Galvez, Gabriel Ramos, Dwight Brown of the Belize Men’s National Team are going on athletic scholarships that will last from two to four years.

“We keep achieving great things and continue investing in the development of our athletes and our country,” said the FFB.

“The FFB has invested in this journey and today the athletes signed their commitment letters. We continue investing in the educational, professional, and athletic development of our young, aspiring Belizean footballers.”

Of the 16 scholarships, seven are full scholarships and the other nine are partial scholarships. The FFB said the Ministry of Education has agreed to give those nine students a US$300.00 monthly subsidy starting January 2023.

FFB President Sergio Chuc said the Ministry of Sports brokered the deal with the Ministry of Education.

“We look forward to you doing great things out there. You are going on athletic scholarships but at the same time, you need to keep up your grades. Don’t settle for the minimum. Go as far as you can. You are on an athletic scholarship so they will expect that you perform your football prowess to the best that you can. We are extremely proud of all you guys” said Chuc.

The FFB has to finance each student with over $3,000 each to register them into the scholarship program so that their US agent can link them up with a university, said the FFB president.

Thirteen scholarships were negotiated through the offices of the FFB, two were done independently, and one was done through the Ministry of Sports.

Chuc said these athletic scholarships will provide footballers with an academic education that will facilitate their integration into the working mainstream once their football careers are over. Chuc reminded the footballers that only two percent of footballers who want to become professional footballers achieve their goals, so it’s very important to have a career.

Chuc said that the FFB will continue working on the scholarship program and expects to send more players to study abroad next year.

Chuc said the FFB has secured airplane tickets to the United States for six of the players and if the FFB gets any other commitments they will help other players. Two more were in the pipeline. The goal is to get tickets for all 16.

“We look forward for you to do great things out there. You are going on an athletic scholarship but at the same time, you need to keep up your grades. Don’t settle for the minimum. Go as far as you can. You are on an athletic scholarship so they will expect that you perform your football prowess to the best that you can. We are extremely proud of all you guys” said Chuc.

Four of the players will be studying at the Master’s level, six will be pursuing Bachelor’s degrees, and six will be working towards Associates degrees.

The total value of the scholarships per year ascends to over BZ$823,000.
