Bay City win NAWL B championship, Wagiya SC United give them a good run for their money

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Corozal’s Bay City FC defeated Wagiya SC United to claim the National Amateur Women’s League B championship but, unlike the entire championship, on Sunday they were challenged to the max by a very determined Dangriga-side that made the game worthy of a final.

After scoring 96 goals in ten matches and not allowing any the entire season, Bay City were expected to rout Wagiya SC United, particularly after beating their Final’s opponents 4-0 and 6-0 during the regular season.

But on Sunday, Wagiya SC United played their best game and challenged the now champions pushing them to the limit and threatening to tie the ball game in the last few minutes.

The onset appeared more of the same as Bay City went ahead 2-0 in the first 12 minutes on goals by Kaite Jones in the 5’ and Aaliyah Herbert the 12’.

But after that, they just couldn’t get the ball past Wagiya SC United goalkeeper Alisha Alvarez.

Wagiya SC United pushed forward and found the next in the 88th when Taryn Arnold powered a shot that beat Bay City keeper Zidienny Loria. Though Arnold had a couple more opportunities, that would be the only goal scored against Bay City during the entire season.

At the long whistle, Bay City celebrated their national title, but Wagiya had to have the satisfaction of a game well played, better than many expected.
