By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Sagitun GIRLZ won the National Amateur Women’s League A championship defeating San Pedro Pirates 4-2 at the FFB Stadium on Sunday evening in Belmopan.

The Sagitun GIRLZ won the National Amateur Women’s League A championship defeating San Pedro Pirates 4-2 at the FFB Stadium on Sunday evening in Belmopan.

Jurshia Zuniga was the hero of the game scoring a hat-trick. Zuniga hit the opener pushing through the middle unleashing a power shot past goalkeeper Dennisa Mairena in the 11’.

But San Pedro reacted positively, tying the ball game in the 24’ on a goal by Elva Núñez who placed it beyond the grasp of Sagitun goalkeeper Shalini Zabaneh and then going ahead on a strike by Tamara Baptist in the 38’.

And while San Pedro took control of the game in the first half, the second half belonged to the Sagitun GIRLZ.

Zuniga, taking advantage of a San Pedro Pirates error, ran up in the right flank powering a right-to-left shot which found the net and tied the ball game at 2-2.

Pauline Linarez converted a penalty kick in the 79’ to give the Sagitun GIRLZ a 3-2 edge. Then Zuniga put the icing on the cake with a shot between the legs of keeper Mairena in the 90’+3 to seal the crown.

The Sagitun GIRLZ celebrated like never before. After all it wasn’t any small feat, they had just become the new NAWL Champions.

The San PEDRO Pirates are the new national subchampions.
