Former Mexican President Luis Echeverria Alvarez linked to brutal repression dead at 100

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Former Mexican President, Luis Echeverria who is most known for the roughest 6 years in Mexico called “dirty war” has died at the age of 100, Reuters report.

On Saturday, Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador took to Twitter to extend condolences on his passing.

Echeverria narrowly escaped efforts by Mexican prosecutors to indict him for genocide for his role in 2 massacres of student protesters in 1968 and 1971 that helped define an era of heavy-handed state repression.

Echeverria denied any wrongdoing although his presidency from 1970 to 1976 was tainted by accusations that he ordered troops to open fire on thousands of peacefully demonstrating students in 1968.

In addition, hundreds of students were beaten and jailed after the protest.

More recently, Echeverria was having respiratory and neurological difficulties.

Despite decades of calls by activists for his arrest, the former leader never spent a day in prison.
