By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Grenada’s Kirani James, who won bronze in the 400m at the Tokyo Olympics, will miss the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
“I regret to inform you that Kirani James will not be attending the 2022 Commonwealth Games,” said Hypolite, Grenada’s Chief of Mission to the Games.
According to Loop News, several of the Commonwealth’s top track and field athletes had given indication they would not be in Birmingham because of scheduling conflict with the World Athletics Championships, in Eugene, Oregon from July 15 to 24.
Hypolite didn’t say if James was not attending Birmingham 2022 because of the scheduling conflict.
James won the 400m race in 2014 in Glasgow, Scotland but he had to skip the 2018 Games in Australia due to Graves’ disease.
Grenada will be sending 14 athletes to Birmingham to compete in athletics, boxing, swimming and cycling.
Grenada is hopeful Lindon Victor, who won gold at Gold Coast 2018 in the decathlon, and Anderson Peters, who was the bronze medallist in the javelin and is the defending world champion, can earn them some heavy metal at the Birmingham Games.
