Guatemala closes borders to gangs fleeing El Salvador

Posted: Monday, July 11, 2022. 9:26 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Guatemalan authorities have detained over 100 Salvadoran gang members, Dialogo Americas reports.

The Guatemalan authorities have enacted their integral tactical operational plan with specialized units along the Salvadoran-Guatemalan border.

“We deployed the Army and Police not only thinking in terms of traditional customs stations but border stations and roads as well. To date, we’ve sent back a total of 125 identified gang members,” Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei stated.

The move began on March 27 when the Salvadoran government began its crackdown on gang violence in the country.

The Guatemalan authorities have also set police checkpoints near known entry points in an effort to detain those gang members fleeing their country.

In addition, authorities from both countries are working together to combat organized crime.

Officials in Guatemala and Belize have also strengthened cooperation through Interpol and have deported Salvadoran nationals entering both countries illegally.
