Mexican President heads to Washington to discuss migration

Posted: Monday, July 11, 2022. 9:19 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is traveling to Washington to meet with U.S. President Joe Biden to discuss ways to stem Mexican migrant crossings, Reuters report.

The significant meeting comes amidst an increase in arrests at the U.S.-Mexico border and deaths of migrants attempting to reach American soil.

In addition, the leaders are expected to discuss jobs and investments.

At the Summit of the Americas held last month, most governments including Mexico signed a declaration intended to help the region regulate migrant flows.

The leaders are also expected to discuss work visas for Mexicans since the U.S. is experiencing a shortage of workers.

Experts say that the demand in Mexico for going to the U.S. has rapidly increased as thousands of Mexicans and Central Americans are seeking higher wages and a better standard of living abroad.
