By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Data from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that there are now over 8,000 confirmed cases of monkeypox.
Three deaths have been reported due to the virus.
The World Health Organization (WHO) says that monkeypox is transmitted to humans through close contact with an infected person or animal, or with material contaminated with the virus.
Symptoms include fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes and the virus may lead to a range of medical complications.
Experts say that most of the reported cases are among men who identify as gay, bisexual, or men who have sex with men.
However, monkeypox is not considered a sexually transmitted disease.
Scientists say that anyone regardless of sexual orientation is at risk of catching monkeypox if they are in close, physical contact with an infected person.
