Study: Youths turning to TikTok for uplifting news stories

Posted: Monday, July 11, 2022. 10:23 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A report by Reuters found that young people are turning to TikTok for uplifting news stories, News UK reports.

The report said that young people are avoiding “depressing stories”.

The 2022 Reuters Institute Digital News Report noted that now, TikTok is the fastest growing network reaching 40% of people ages 18 to 24 and 15% using that platform for news.

TikTok and Instagram are known for social influencers sharing their own content but with the addition of news stories and inspirational stories, young people between the age ranges of 18 to 24 now have little allegiance to Facebook.

In addition, younger age groups said that they hold a stronger preference for journalists being able to “push the boundaries” and express their personal opinions freely on social media.

The youths are now choosing to limit their exposure to “serious” news.

The report also noted that declining trust is a challenge for public media organizations, as they try to fulfill their mission to appeal to all audiences.
