Gang violence in Haiti leave over 50 people dead

Posted: Tuesday, July 12, 2022. 10:40 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: More than 50 people lost their lives and over 100 more were wounded as the war between rival gangs continues in Haiti, Reuters report.

Shootouts between rival gangs continue in Cite Soleil and of the 100 wounded people, 50 are listed in critical condition.

Mayor Joel Janeus says that people who were hunkering down during the shootings were killed and those who tried to flee were hit by bullets.

In addition, gangs have blocked access to the Varreux fuel terminal.

The violence seems to be the result of a confrontation between the G9 and the GPEP gangs.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, the Caribbean nation commemorated the 1 year anniversary of President Jovenel Moise’s murder and the country has yet to charge anyone with his assassination.

Kidnappings have increased since then and much of the country is now governed by gangs, the report notes.
