‘Handyman’ charged for allegedly stealing almost $6,000 worth of jewelry from elderly woman’s bedroom

By BBN Staff: Thirty-eight-year-old Belize City resident Phillip McKenzie, is out on bail after being charged for stealing almost $6,000 worth of jewelry from an elderly woman.

At his arraignment in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, McKenzie pleaded not guilty to a single charge of theft and was granted bail in the sum of $2,000 plus one surety of the same, which he was able to meet.

The victim told police that she hired McKenzie, whom she knows as “Felipe,” who had previously done maintenance work for her. She says she called him to fix the air conditioning unit in her bedroom on May 4. He was in her bedroom for about 10 minutes, then said he was going to buy food and would return shortly.

After a half-hour, the victim said she entered her bedroom and stepped on an earring, which prompted her to check on her jewelry. She made a report to the police giving them the phone number she had used to call McKenzie, and police later found him in the Belama Phase 1 area of Belize City, having been hired by someone else to do some work on their house.

Mckenzie tried to escape capture by jumping a fence once police arrived, but ended up injuring himself before eventually being apprehended. He was later identified by the victim as the man to whom she gave access to her bedroom.
