By Rubén Morales Iglesias: It’s been an uphill struggle for Nefretery Nancy Marin to get approval for her ostrich farm, but now that that hurdle has been taken care of, she is going about starting the Belize Ostrich Livestock Association

“If you are interested in joining the Belize Ostrich Livestock Association, please inbox me with your email address to get the process started. Please do it ASAP,” Marin wrote on social media.

Of late, Marin received support from Prime Minister John Briceño who in February said ostrich farming would be a good economic opportunity.

More recently, Belize Agriculture Health Association (BAHA) Chairman Hugh O’Brien said ostrich farming is coming, adding that the Minister of Agriculture Jose Abelardo Mai was all for it. Minister of New Growth Industries Kareem Musa also shared his support for Ostrich farming and welcomed the initiative.

Breaking Belize News (BBN) has been informed that Marin has obtained the BAHA permit as well as the Forestry permit that are both needed to facilitate the importation of the Ostriches. Once the Ostriches being imported test negative for four (4) important diseases, then the Ostriches will be cleared for export to Belize. Upon their arrival, the Ostriches are to be placed in quarantine at Marin’s farm in Georgeville, and the animals will be closely monitored by both BAHA and the Forestry department.

Commercial Ostrich farming in Belize may soon be a reality, and with the move to establish the Belize Ostrich Livestock Association, more farmers may be getting involved soon.
