People’s United Party, Belize Peace Movement mark passing of Dr. Ted Aranda

By Aaron Humes: The ruling People’s United Party have sent their heartfelt condolences to the Aranda family on the passing of parliamentarian and former Opposition Leader Dr. Theodore “Ted” Aranda.

The PUP described him as “a visionary leader, a lifelong academic, an erudite statesman and a well-respected leader…He was a principled policymaker with a unique sense of compassion, kindness and fairness and played an important role in the development of his community.”

Meanwhile, the Belize Peace Movement which worked with Dr. Aranda after his political heyday, issued a statement on the loss of “a great Belizean patriot, a true visionary, political leader and Leader of the Garifuna people thru the World Garifuna Organization which he founded.”

It noted that he helped organize the joint celebration of the 126th anniversary of the Spencer/Mariscal border treaty establishing Belize’s boundaries with Mexico. On this occasion, a visit was made to the northern border crossing where a historic official ceremony was held. Dr. Aranda, according to the BPM, also expressed interest in the establishment of formal relationships with cities in neighbouring Mexico and Dangriga.

Dr. Aranda died on Sunday at the age of 88. No details have been given on funeral arrangements.
