By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A group of scientists from Baylor College of Medicine in the United States is conducting a study on COVID-19 antibodies in Belize.
This study will assist researchers and public health officials in better understanding the spread of the virus and identifying vulnerable populations to more effectively mitigate the risks of outbreaks.
The United States Embassy in Belize says that this program is funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The study is critical in helping Belize assess and monitor the spread of the virus in the country, as well as assess levels of protection in a community, the Embassy stated.
Last month, the Baylor team collected blood samples for antibody testing and health histories from volunteers who work in the tourism sector in San Pedro Town.
“Scientists will study the results at the Baylor College of Medicine, with the findings helping to inform understandings of community-level immunity against COVID-19. The team will return in December for the second part of the study,” a statement from the Embassy noted.
The U.S. Embassy added that the U.S. continues to stand united with Belize in the fight against the pandemic.
