By Aaron Humes: Belize got off to a winning start Tuesday night in the 19th Central American U-21 Female Volleyball Championship at the Belize Civic Center, defeating Nicaragua in three sets, 25-15, 25-19, 25-23.

The Belize side rode early momentum to a comfortable opening set victory but had to dig deep to hold multiple Nicaragua rallies in the second and third set.

A dominant front three of Fatimah Ramirez, Garrett Bruce and Kaya Gordon held the block while Iman Safa and substitute Marci Maheia kept them at bay with booming serves, while captain/libero Sofia Solano and Zallika Henderson held Belize’s middle.

Commentators noted that most of the team had played with each other for some time and any nerves from playing at home as the senior side did in 2018 disappeared with a mostly error-free first set. They had to work harder in the second and third sets as errors let in a resilient Nicaragua before they were defeated.

The girls have the day off today before returning to action on Thursday against El Salvador, which lost to Honduras in five sets to open the tournament earlier on Tuesday, followed by the Hondurans on Friday and Guatemala on Saturday.
