By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is in Washington meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden to discuss migration concerns among other issues.
On Tuesday, President Lopez Obrador pledged to spend $1.5 billion to upgrade its northern border, Reuters report.
The significant discussion comes amidst an increase in migrant caravans journeying through Mexico with hopes of reaching American soil.
The leaders issued a joint statement committing to taking “immediate and coordinated steps to manage the flows of migrants arriving into our countries.”
During their discussion at the White House, President Joe Biden said, “Despite the overhyped headlines we sometimes see, you and I have a strong, productive relationship.”
Mexico committed to spending $1.5 billion on border infrastructure between 2022 and 2024.
The projects were for the U.S.-Mexico border, aimed at reinforcing infrastructure, and extending and upgrading border crossings.
The Mexican President also requested legal work visas, however, President Joe Biden highlighted existing programs used by Mexicans and Central Americans.
Meanwhile, in May alone, U.S. authorities made about 70,000 arrests of Mexican migrants among those are repeat crossers.
