By BBN Staff: A Belize City woman, who admitted in court that she begs for a living to feed her four children, has been fined over $300 for shoplifting.

Thirty-eight-year-old Queenie Ferguson appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, charged with a single count of theft, to which she pleaded guilty.

Ferguson was caught stealing some seasoning and a pair of slippers from a store in Ladyville Village, and told the court that she was pressured by a friend to steal.

She also said that she has stolen before but this is the first time she got caught. Ferguson assured the court it would not happen again.

She was fined $350 plus $5 cost of court, but when she said she could not pay the fine, which is due by September 30, the Magistrate explained that he did not want to send Ferguson to jail on a first offense.
