Julius Espat says fixing Belcan Bridge is “number one priority”

By Aaron Humes: While all three of Belize City’s primary bridges are in various states of stress, the top priority is finding a fix for the Belcan Bridge – the primary carriageway for buses and other travelers to the North of the country.

Minister of Infrastructure Development and Housing, Julius Espat told reporters that a feasibility study is being conducted in respect of how to repair and replace the Belcan and Swing Bridges; the Belchina Bascule Bridge, the youngest bar the Chetumal Street Bridge of the major carriageways, is the least damaged and will undergo necessary but routine maintenance.

Espat explained that years of buses, heavy trucks and others crossing the Belcan has weakened it to the point that a catastrophic accident would cause loss of life, not to mention immobilizing traffic through the area.
