Prime Minister confirms National Environmental Appraisal Committee reviewing Waterloo cruise port plans; some information lacking

Posted: Friday, July 15, 2022. 3:11 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño has confirmed that the National Environmental Appraisal Committee (NEAC) “continues to review the environmental plans for the cruise ship terminal at the Port of Belize site in Belize City.”

In response to a question from Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow, the P.M. stated that “In the most recent update to Cabinet, [it was] indicated that certain critical information from the applicant remained pending, and [in] the absence of that information, approval or disapproval could not be given; nobody is above the law.”

The Prime Minister maintained that NEAC is an independent body, and with the health of the Barrier Reef at stake, NEAC’s approval is needed and Government will not intervene. He maintained that investment is welcome and “confidence has returned” with the Government’s pro-business approach driving economic recovery in tourism, manufacturing, real estate, agriculture and other industries that have begun or are in the process of beginning and the National Investment Policy and Strategy will govern these efforts.
