Proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 test no longer required to enter or leave Belize

By Hugh O’Brien: Minister of Health and Wellness, Kevin Bernard, has signed a new Statutory Instrument removing major COVID-19 restrictions that were in place for travellers entering or leaving Belize.

The new Statutory Instrument (SI) 100 of 2022, signed into effect on Tuesday, July 13th, means that tourists entering Belize and Belizeans returning home, by land, sea or air, no longer have to provide proof of vaccination, or a negative COVID-19 test upon arrival. Likewise when leaving Belize, tourists nor Belizeans are no longer required to do a COVID-19 test or show proof of vaccination.

Another major change particularly for tourists is that the purchase of the ‘Belize Travel Insurance’ is now optional. The travel insurance program was launched as a COVID-19 measure in case a tourist tested positive or fell ill while in Belize, and protected local hotels from having to bear the cost of isolation, treatment and hospitalization. The Belize Tourism Board in a social media post encouraged tourists to still sign up for the travel insurance for “protection against incurred medical and non-medical emergency expenses”.

The new SI repeals the previous SI Number 61 of 2022 but maintain control over importing COVID-19 testing kits, keeps a false vaccination card as an offense, and promotes self-testing.
