BREAKING: Heartbreak as Belize drops five-set thriller to Guatemala in volleyball championship

By Aaron Humes: Belize will finish as runners-up once again after a five-set defeat by Guatemala, 19-25, 25-20, 25-20, 19-25, 11-15 in the Central American U-21 Female Volleyball Championship at the Belize Civic Center.

Guatemala rode top server Maria Santa Cruz’s power and precision placement and took advantage of multiple mental lapses and errors by a Belize side that, for the first time in the tournament, felt the weight of being hosts. Minister of State for Youth and Sports Gilroy Usher Senior and Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow were among those in attendance.

The usually dominant front block was nudged out of position numerous times and unforced errors halted multiple Belize runs.

Belize led by 2 sets to 1 after a recovery in the second and third sets, but Guatemala took charge in the fourth set and outgunned the home side for top honours.

We congratulate Team Belize on another valiant effort even in defeat this evening.
