More than 200,000 migrants apprehended near US-Mexico border in June

Posted: Saturday, July 16, 2022. 10:17 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Data from the U.S. border patrol indicate that there were 222,000 apprehensions along the United States Southern Border in June 2022, Yahoo reports.

This is an all-time monthly high and the agency noted that it processed 191,898 migrants along the U.S. Southern border in June.

Authorities say the high levels of migrant detentions are driven in part by record arrivals from countries including Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.

In addition, there was a significant rate of repeat illegal crossings.

For the fiscal year 2022, U.S. border authorities have processed migrants over 1.7 million times, exceeding the record in 2021.

According to the statistics, about 47% of those apprehensions resulted in migrants expelled to Mexico or their home country.

The others were released with a court notice, sent to detention centers or deported under regular deportation procedures, including a program known as “expedited removal.”

And, though there was an increase in apprehensions of migrants from Guatemala, Honduras, Venezuela, and El Salvador in June compared to May, arrivals from the other top migrant-sending countries of Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, Nicaragua, Haiti and Brazil decreased.
