By Benjamin Flowers: Five months into the Russian invasion of Ukraine, there have reportedly been 17,000 attacks killing thousands and displacing millions, with more on the way as Russia’s Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu recently gave an order to intensify military operations in Ukraine, Aljazeera reports.

On Saturday, Shoigu reportedly gave the order to intensify military operations in Ukraine, in order to “exclude the possibility of the Kyiv regime launching massive rocket and artillery attacks on civilian infrastructure and residents of settlements in the Donbas and other regions.”

The intensified military actions have seen several civilian targets hit with missile or mortar blasts, with almost 20 more people confirmed dead and scores more left injured. Russia has reportedly attacked apartment complexes, grocery stores, farms, and warehouses among other targets.

Following the attacks Ukraine’s atomic energy agency accused Russia of using Europe’s largest nuclear power plant to store weapons and shell the surrounding regions of Nikopol and Dnipro that were hit Saturday.

The plant, located in southeast Ukraine, was captured not long after Russia invaded in February, but the facility is still operated by Ukrainian staff.

Earlier this month Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, acknowledged that Russian forces drove Ukrainian troops out of the city of Lysychansk, the last Ukrainian stronghold in the eastern Luhansk province, but said that retaking the city would be possible with the help of long-range Western weapons.
