By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Department of Co-operatives, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise, last week conducted a record-keeping training session for the Maya Green Growers Co-operative and the Sayab Farmers Group, both from San Antonio in the Cayo District.

“The Sayab Farmers Group are going through the process of being registered as a new co-operative” said the Department of Co-operatives.

The Department explained that maintaining records to monitor and record their everyday business activities is a requirement under the Co-operative Societies Act.

“Keeping accurate and up-to-date records is vital to the success of any enterprise as well as meeting the financial commitments of the enterprise and providing information on which decisions for the future can be based,” said the Department of Cooperatives.

The training session was one of eight sessions planned as part of the curriculum to become a cooperative that the Department of Co-operatives has designed for the farmers’ groups wanting to become cooperatives.
