Police officers are being investigated for allegedly shooting civilians in San Pedro

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Police Department has launched an internal and criminal investigation after two men were reportedly shot by police over the weekend in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye.

Head of Communications for the Office of the Commissioner of Police ASP Fitzroy Yearwood explained that officers on patrol responded to the sound of gunshots and saw two men on a red motorbike fleeing the area. The officers tried to get the men to stop but they sped off, and the officers fired shots at them trying to get them to stop.

Shortly after, police were called to the San Pedro Polyclinic where they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds.

“The Professional Standards Branch is investigating the matter, likewise the CIB (Crimes Investigation Branch). Thus far the officers have been identified, and we will see what the directive from the Commissioner will be after the investigation,” Yearwood said.
