Two men charged with the rape of a 14-year-old girl are remanded to prison

By BBN Staff: Ronald Michael and Herman Grant, both 33 years old, have been remanded to the Belize Central Prison in connection with the rape of a 14-year-old girl.

The men appeared separately in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, with Michael facing two counts of rape of a child and one count of threatening words. The allegations against him are that he raped the victim on July 7, and then returned two days later and did so again. He also allegedly threatened to kill the victim and her entire family if she told anyone that he had raped her.

Grant was only charged with one count of rape of a child.

No plea was taken from them as the offense is to be tried in the Supreme Court; however, both men vehemently denied the allegations against them.

Michael told the court that he was at work at the time the alleged rape took place, and pleaded with police to go to his place of employment and check the surveillance footage. He went on to say that, as an uncle of three nieces and the stepfather of three girls, he could never bring himself to commit rape.

Grant told the court that at the time the alleged incident happened, he was at home studying for the police intake examination.

They were both denied bail and remanded until September 19.

The victim told police that around 7:30 p.m. on July 7, she was on the street and a car with a taxi license plate drove up beside her. The occupants then abducted her and took her to the Buttonwood Bay area where they raped her. She identified the two accused as her attackers.
