By Rubén Morales Iglesias: 29 of 30 Belizean agriculture students from Corozal, Orange Walk, Cayo, and Toledo Districts who completed a 90-day agricultural training program in Colombia arrived in Belize on Monday.

The 29 students graduated from the course last week at Fundación Panaca in Colombia. They had been in Colombia since April. One person had to come back earlier for personal reasons.

“The program covering thirty full scholarships for each of the eight participating countries is a part of the project, Agricultural Technical Work Training for Rural Leaders, which aims at strengthening South-South Cooperation with the countries of the Andean Community (Ecuador, Bolivia, and Peru) and some countries of the Mesoamerica Project (Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Costa Rica),” said the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).

The Agricultural Labor Technical Training Program scholarship is sponsored by the Colombian Government through the Presidential Agency for International Cooperation (APC Colombia).

MAFSE said the course was conducted by “specialized professionals and expert personnel who manage the production processes in the facilities of the Interactive Center for Science and Technology of the Agricultural Sector, FundaPanaca”.

MAFSE highlighted the fact that 13 of the 30 total are women like Damaris De La Rosa who was recently featured in a post by Sustainable Harvest International (SHI).

According to Sustainable Harvest International (SHI), the Fundación Panaca and APC Colombia project is an innovative and visionary program that is leading the way in helping transform food systems for a healthier planet.

APC Colombia offers the Agricultural Technician Training Program for Rural Leaders every five years to countries of South and Central America. This was the first time the program was offered to Belizean participants. Seventy-five persons from all over the country applied and 30 were chosen by the Colombian embassy personnel.
