Senate approves loan for rehabilitation of key stretch of Philip Goldson Highway

Posted: Tuesday, July 19, 2022. 9:39 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Government has been cleared to borrow 48 million dollars from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) to expand and rehabilitate a stretch of road along the Philip Goldson Highway between miles 8 and 24.

Acting Opposition Senator Philip Willoughby was sure to note the government’s “hypocrisy” that while in Opposition themselves, they complained that “we cannot eat streets or its infrastructure” but commended the Government and encouraged Belizeans to protect our usage of the infrastructure on its completion, as taxpayers’ money is spent to build it.

Replying for the Government, Isabel Bennett called Willoughby’s comments “hilarious” before noting, “I could remember at a point when Belize seemed to have been just focused on infrastructure, and I was saying to myself, well, these highways would last us a very, very long time. But before you know it, the highways were deplorable, and much of the monies that were spent had [had] to be given to specific contractors. I got that it was not in the best interests of the infrastructure of the country. And even as I listened just now, I thank you, Senator deputizing, that you mentioned that what we are doing now, as a government, will last a very, very long time.”

Business Senator, Kevin Herrera, is a resident of the general area and offered his commendation, but advised that “at some point in the process … there should be some audit of contracts that would ensure the value is there within these contracts.”
