By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Health officials are warning that COVID-19 cases continue to spike globally, fueled by the highly infectious BA.5 variant.
Officials say that it is not time to be complacent.
In the U.S, the BA.5 variant has become the dominant strain and is driving a significant spike in cases, CNN reported.
Europe has also seen a tripling of COVID-19 cases over the past month, with almost 3 million cases reported last week.
And, as travel returns to some form of normalcy with eased restrictions, and events resume worldwide, the number of infections may be higher.
Dr. Peter Hotez, co-director of the Center for Vaccine Development at Texas Children’s Hospital said that this is a full-on BA.5 wave.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has called on countries to re-introduce precautionary measures before it is too late.
“It’s now abundantly clear we’re in a similar situation to last summer — only this time the ongoing Covid-19 wave is being propelled by sub-lineages of the Omicron variant, notably BA.2 and BA.5, with each dominant sub-lineage of Omicron showing clear transmission advantages over the previously circulating viruses,” WHO’s regional director for Europe, Hans Kluge, said in a statement.
In Belize, there are 660 active cases of COVID-19, 138 new cases and 680 people lost their lives to the deadly virus.
The public is advised to take their own precautionary measures and get vaccinated.
