By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that as of July 19th, there were 14,511 confirmed cases of Monkeypox globally.
In the U.S, there are 2, 108 reported cases of the virus.
Health experts such as the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Anthony Fauci are sounding the alarm and calling on authorities to take Monkeypox more “seriously”.
“This is something we definitely need to take seriously. We don’t know the scope and the potential of it yet, but we have to act like it will have the capability of spreading much more widely than it’s spreading right now,” Dr. Fauci told CNN.
Experts warn that it may now be too late to contain the virus.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) is scheduled to reconvene its emergency panel tomorrow, July 21 to decide whether the monkeypox outbreak constitutes a global health emergency.
