By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Eight teams are set to play in the new Premier League of Belize season but not all teams have their club licenses yet, so the PLB is meeting tonight to decide on the championship kickoff.

According to League Manager Wilhelm Miguel, six of the nine PLB clubs will compete in the championship along with two new clubs.

The six PLB clubs are Top League champions Verdes, subchampions Altitude, San Pedro Pirates, Bandits, Wagiya, and Police United who have joined with Benque FC. The two new clubs are Port Loyola FC and Orange Walk’s Progresso FC.

The Freedom Fighters, Placencia Assassins, and the Belize Defence Force have all asked to be excused for this season,” said Miguel.

“For right now because the club licensing is what is required to participate and so far we have five clubs that have received their club licenses.”

Those five clubs are Verdes, Altitude, San Pedro Pirates, Bandits, and Wagiya.

Miguel said the Football Federation of Belize’s (FFB) Club Licensing Committee was also meeting today to consider the application by the other three, namely Police United, Port Loyola, and Progresso.

The PLB had already decided to kick off the 2022-23 season this coming Saturday, July 23, but now they must decide depending on the club licensing decision.

For now, the weekend kickoff is still tentative.

The PLB has been inactive for two years due to internal problems but is now back on track. Last season, the FFB organized Belize’s top competition under the name FFB Top League.
