Andre Gordon, convicted of rape, remanded to prison until sentencing hearing

Posted: Thursday, July 21, 2022. 9:30 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Thirty-seven-year-old Andre Gordon was convicted of rape in the Supreme Court this week.

Gordon was accused of anally raping a 21-year-old woman on February 24, 2017. At the trial, which was before Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sandcroft, Gordon was represented by attorney Leeroy Banner while the crown was represented by leading Crown Counsel, Riis Cattouse and Robert Lord.

Gordon had relied upon the defense that the sex between him and the victim was consensual. He further alleged that the victim cried rape because she was a professed lesbian, but someone who knew her found out about her having sex with him, so she made the rape allegations to protect her image. Justice Sandcroft said he did not believe Gordon’s account of the events.

Justice Sandcroft said that he had no reason to reject the testimony of the victim as he accepted her evidence as truth. He explained that the consideration that needed to be made was if the identification of Gordon by the victim was true, but since Gordon placed himself at the scene at the time of the incident, the identification was a non-issue.

A neighbor also testified that she heard a loud banging coming from the victim’s room and a voice crying out “No. Leave me alone.”

After considering all the evidence, the Judge found Gordon guilty and deferred sentencing until September 30.
