By BBN Staff: Paul Jex Jr. the 26-year-old Belize City resident charged with raping a woman in front of her 1-year-old child at gunpoint during a home invasion in 2015, was convicted in the Supreme court this week with the help of DNA evidence.
Jex was one of 7 men accused in a home invasion in Burrell Boom village, where they tied up and beat the watchman, then stole weapons, surveillance equipment, and various other items. The victim testified that, during the incident, she refused to have sex with Jex, and he pointed a gun at her child and threatened to shoot if the victim did not comply, so she did.
At the trial, the complainant was unable to identify the rapist as he wore a shirt covering his face during the incident, and during the rape, however, the rapist left behind a towel at the scene which he had used clean himself up after the rape. Jex was not charged with rape until May 2018 when DNA results came back from the USA identifying him as the man who raped the watchman’s wife.
In a 52-page judgment handed down on Wednesday, Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sandcroft found Jex guilty, and deferred his sentencing hearing to July 28.
