By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Medical experts say that the BA.4 and BA.5 COVID-19 infection in children can look different from symptoms experienced by adults, Business Insider reports.
Children can experience diarrhea and vomiting along with fever and sore throat when they have contracted the highly infectious subvariant.
Experts believe that the 2 Omicron sub-variants are responsible for about 90% of US cases.
Dr. Julianne Burns, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Stanford Children’s Health in California, noted that symptoms of COVID haven’t differed too much from what she noticed with Omicron previously.
“We’ve seen less loss of taste and smell,” Dr. Burns noted.
However, children and adults have symptoms such as sore throat, runny nose, cough, fatigue, fever, headaches, and body aches.
Children are also experiencing more stomach issues than adults do and at times that is how you know that a child is infected, Dr. Burns said.
Experts continue to advise the public to avoid closed spaces, wear masks in public areas, and don’t go near anyone with symptoms of a cold.
