By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Twin Towns Baseball Association (TTBA) is holding a Baseball Summer Camp in San Ignacio from August 1-5 in an attempt to get baseball off the ground in Cayo.

The TTBA said the five-day camp will be held at the Sacred Heart College Football Field from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. The objective is to teach hitting, fielding, and running to youths 8-19 years of age.

If interested, call TTBA president Ali Awe at 626-2765.

Participants are advised to wear proper attire including a baseball cap. Water and healthy snacks will be provided.

Awe, a language teacher at Sacred Heart College, said the TTBA was established on February 16, 2022.

According to Awe, he grew up playing baseball in the eighties when the sport was played in several parts of the country. Since then, the sport died out, and he is trying to re-establish it in Cayo.

“We’re trying to just establish baseball in Belize alongside football and basketball. We’re popular for football and basketball here in Belize but not baseball,” he said.

“Back in the 80s we used to play baseball but it kind of just died away. We had a group of guys in the late eighties and early nineties, we used to get together and play baseball,” Awe said enthusiastically.

“We used to have competitions against each other. We had at least four teams in this area in San Ignacio. That lasted for about five years and then we grew older, and we went our separate ways and the younger generation did not continue playing baseball. But since I grew up playing it and love the sport, I and some other people are trying to get it going again.”

“So, what we’re trying to do is to revive baseball, and eventually we are trying to get a federation together.

Awe mentioned that there are associations in the Belize and Southern Districts and the Northern districts are working on forming one.

“Eventually when we get at least four associations up and going, we will establish that federation, and then eventually the tournaments will come.”

“Right now, there is no local tournament which is why I am doing this camp to try to get baseball going,” he said.

Awe said he is trying to convince the NSSSA to change softball to baseball for boys.

Hopefully, this move takes hold and doesn’t die out.
