Belize Sugar Industries Limited weighs in on early morning accident

Posted: Friday, July 22, 2022. 1:54 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The driver of a molasses truck traveling north on the Philip Goldson Highway this morning before tangling with a bus and a Bowen and Bowen distribution truck at Rhaburn Ridge, Belize District, is under observation in hospital after treatment according to employers Belize Sugar Industries Limited/American Sugar Refining (BSI/ASR).

In a statement the company reports that the truck was “badly damaged,” but there was no loss of life, adding, “Additionally, our Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) team ensured that no molasses was spilled.”

BSI/ASR contends that “Based on our analytics, the molasses truck was traveling at approximately 42 mph [miles per hour], as our fleet speed is controlled and locked at a maximum of 45 mph to mitigate speeding challenges. This control measure is one of the many ways BSI prioritizes the safety of its employees and the public.” Bowen and Bowen in its earlier statement also contended that their driver was under the posted speed limit.

BSI/ASR says it is cooperating with the police investigation and has helped clean debris from the area to help restore traffic flow.
