National Kriol Council (NKC) says exclusion from People’s Constitution Commission disrespectful to afro-descendant Belizeans

Posted: Friday, July 22, 2022. 3:02 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The National Kriol Council (NKC) has condemned its exclusion from the People’s Constitution Commission, the body formed to make recommendations for constitutional reform to the Government of Belize (GOB).

The NCK issued a statement today, emphasizing that its exclusion from the commission is cause for alarm and amounts to a threat against every citizen that identifies as a descendant of those enslaved Africans who built the foundations of a politically independent Belize.

The Council says that the exclusion, whether accidental or by design, diminished the Belizean Kriol of enslaved African ancestry, who account for around 30 percent of Belize’s population as per the 2010 population and housing census.

‘This exclusion is particularly egregious as it is occurring during the 2015 – 2024 UN International Decade for People of African Descent under the theme “People of African descent: recognition, justice, and development,”‘ the NKC said.

The NKC respectfully called on GOB to remedy the error and ensure that the council is allowed to represent Belize Kriol of enslaved African ancestry on the Commission.
