By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Tang Lu, the ex-husband of popular Chinese vlogger Lamu, has been executed after being found guilty of setting his ex-wife on fire. Lamu, a well-known vlogger on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok, was set on fire by her ex-husband while she was live-streaming, BBC reports.
Thousands of followers watched videos about her life in the Sichuan province.
Her ex-husband, Tang Lu was sentenced to death for the offense. The court noted that Lu, who was divorced in 2020, had a history of violence against his wife.
Three months after the divorce, he doused her with fuel at her father’s home and set her alight. She suffered burns to 90% of her body and died two weeks later.
Lu has now been executed for the crime and the case has put a spotlight on violence against women in China.
Reports indicate that the popular vlogger had approached authorities about her husband’s abuse when they were married but was told it was a family matter.
Now, activists fear that a recently introduced mandatory 30-day “cooling off” period for couples who plan to divorce may make it harder for women to leave abusive relationships.
