By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “Young people are really the foundation, the future of this country,” Education Minister Francis Fonseca told the young people attending the Belmopan City Council’s TAG TEEN SUMMIT 2022 at the Best Western Plus Belize Biltmore Plaza on Saturday morning.

According to the Belmopan City Council, their first “The Awakened Group” (TAG) Teen Summit is being held under the theme “Learn, Engage, Exchange”.

“The aim of the Summit is to discuss everyday challenges that teens face in their lives, including self-doubt, bullying, drugs, and social media pressures,” said the Belmopan City Council in a social media post.

“I hope that they learned that young people are really the foundation, the future of this country; that education is critically important not only to their personal development but also to the national development of our country,” said Minister Fonseca who said he was proud to be representing the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology.

“As I said to them, it’s important for them to live by certain principles; principles of respect, humility, and to have, I think very importantly, to have a sense of purpose in life, to have a sense of urgency about life. So, I hope that those thoughts that I shared with them stay with them.”

Minister Fonseca said it was a great opportunity to address the youth.

“When I was approached by councilor [Nikki] Augustine about the idea, I was very excited about it. I thought it was a good opportunity for me as the Minister of Education to engage with young people, meet with young people, and share with them our plans and vision at the Ministry of Education but also to hear from them as well. It was an exciting opportunity.”

The Belmopan City Council said the youth forum is expected to provide a space for teenagers “to safely share their experiences, forge new relationships and build positive qualities like confidence, kindness, leadership, and self-respect”.

The TAG Teen Summit will also have addresses by Miss Earth 2021 Destiny Wagner, and Chef Sean Kuylen. The Summit will also feature presentations by Stig Da Artist and psychiatrist Dr. Annel Martinez.

The Summit also features panel discussions on Leveraging Creativity as an Economic Asset, Innovative Entrepreneurship for the Modern Youth of Today, and Influences and Pressures of the Modern Teen.
