Bus operators handed fuel subsidies

Posted: Sunday, July 24, 2022. 10:00 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: As part of its efforts to combat high fuel prices resulting in necessary increases in bus commute prices, the Department of Transport officially handed out fuel subsidies to a representation of 93 bus operators countrywide.

The program will cost $1.6 million and benefit more than 70 thousand daily commuters for at least the next six months.

Prices rose in April as a result of ever-higher fuel prices caused by external factors, such as the war in Ukraine. Cabinet approved the subsidy at that time and has been working with operators to facilitate the process.

The Department of Transport is working with operators to obtain financing for new buses and equipment that will make the ride safer and more comfortable for commuters countrywide.
