UDP’s Shyne Barrow says $364.8 million in loans by the PUP in 2022 is more than one million dollars per day

By BBN Staff: Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow is calling out the Briceno administration for what he calls “hypocrisy” on the issue of public borrowing.

During the last sitting of the House of Representatives, Barrow reminded Prime Minister John Briceno that when in opposition, he criticized the incumbent for borrowing as much as $1 million per day but has borrowed at an even higher rate since assuming office in 2020.

“You and your government have borrowed almost $400 million since you have taken the government and it hasn’t even been two years,” Barrow said.

Recently, the United Democratic Party released an ad, saying that the Briceno administration borrowed $364.8 million in 161 days. The ad showed that between February 4 and July 14, the Briceno administration borrowed a total of $52 million from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), $104.8 million from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), $48 million from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), and $150 million from the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan).

These loans were taken out between February 4 and July 15, 2022.
