By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Club Atletico and Progresso FC lost this past weekend in the semifinals of the NBB Amateur Interdistrict Competition (NBB-AIC) but are still alive as the FFB changed the tournament format going into the semifinals, something that is not the norm for official competitions under the umbrella of FIFA, Concacaf, and the Central American Football Union (Uncaf).

The FIFA norm is that once a competition starts you play it all the way to the final as per the byelaws set before the tournament starts. But the FFB paid no mind to that and reportedly met with the semifinalists last week and changed the semifinals to home and away. The FFB made no public announcement of their decision, so only a few people knew.

On Saturday, the San Pedro Conquerors shocked Club Atlético 3-2 at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan in the first semifinal.

Then, the Griga Conquerors downed Progresso 3-2 as well at the Louisiana Football Field in Orange Walk on Sunday evening.

According to the original cup format, the two Conquerors would be facing off in the final, but because of last week’s decision, a second leg will now be played to determine the finalists.

The return matches will be played this coming weekend. Atlético have their second chance against the Conquerors in San Pedro while Progresso FC will get another break against the Griga Conquerors in Dangriga.

Incidentally, the Final is still a one-shot match.
