Murder and shooting happened within a block of each other

By Aaron Humes: In the span of approximately 20 minutes starting after 4:30 on Monday evening, a single shooter, according to reports, caught two victims only a block from each other in the area of Ebony and Vernon Streets and Amandala Drive (formerly Partridge Street).

Police have confirmed that 49-year-old Darren Erwin Banks, of Oleander Street, was hit first while walking on Ebony Street at around 20 minutes to five; he fell into the drain not far from Santa Barbara Street.

The killer then apparently turned toward the Vernon Street corner with the Drive and approached a group in the yard at the corner, opening fire.

Injured was Kendrick Walton of Corner Vernon Street and Amandala Drive, who was taken to hospital where he remains; the shooter escaped.

Police are investigating both incidents, including their relationship if any.
