Belmopan City Council congratulates organizers and participants of first TAG Teen Summit

By Benjamin Flowers: Today, the Belmopan City Council congratulated the organizers and participants of the first annual The Awakened Group (TAG) Teen Summit, held in Belize City over the weekend.

“The summit educated our youth on how best to respond to the daily challenges they may encounter. The various engaging panel discussions provided a safe space for our youth to share their experiences, create new connections, and develop positive attitudes like self-respect, leadership, kindness, and confidence,” the Council said.

The summit, held at the Best Western Belize Biltmore Plaza on Saturday, July 23 under the theme “Learn, Engage and Exchange,” was organized by Belmopan City Councilor Nikki Augustine.

The event, which targeted participants ages 13-19 years, featured panel discussions on pertinent topics affecting teens in Belize, including: leveraging creativity as an economic asset, influences and pressures of the modern teen, and innovative entrepreneurship for the modern youth.

Participants also engaged in sessions regarding understanding their bodies, mental health, and sexual health.

The summit also featured breakout sessions where teens gathered in groups to discuss a particular topic and make a presentation on it.

“So the sessions were not just us sharing information but also us hearing back from teens on these very important topics. We’ve asked them what they want to talk about, and what topics they feel they want to share with their parents,” Augustine told our newsroom.

She added that, apart from aiming to make the event an annual occurrence, the Council is looking into how it can compile the information and find a way to get it into the hands of parents as a tool to help them broach the discussed topics with their teens.
