Posted: Tuesday, July 26, 2022. 9:09 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has issued a statement saying that it is saddened by the boat tragedy in which 17 Haitian migrants lost their lives, Loop reports.

“This latest disaster brings to the fore once again the desperate situation in Haiti and the reprehensible nature of the actions of those who are taking advantage of people trying to escape,” CARICOM stated.

CARICOM pledged to continue working with Haiti and the international community to bring peace, security, and development to the nation.

“CARICOM looks forward to the apprehension and bringing to justice of those who prey on the hopes and aspirations of vulnerable persons,” the statement added.

Authorities in the Bahamas recovered the bodies of 17 migrants including an infant.

Rescuers found 25 survivors including 2 Bahamian men who are now in police custody pending investigation.

On Sunday Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragedy.
