International News: Omicron BA.5 now accounts for 82% of COVID-19 cases in the U.S.

Posted: Tuesday, July 26, 2022. 1:12 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noted that the BA.5 subvariant of Omicron is estimated to make up 81.9% of COVID-19 cases in the U.S. for the week ending July 23, Reuters report.

The BA.5 sub-variant has been driving an increase in infections around the world and experts say this subvariant is good at evading immune protection.

At this time, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is requesting that vaccine manufacturers target the 2 currently dominant sub-variants (BA.4 and BA.5) for a potential booster dose.

Health officials continue to urge the public to get vaccinated and get their booster shots as this provides good protection against severe illness.
