Man fined over $300 for having just over 4 grams of marijuana more than the legal limit

By BBN Staff: A resident of the Westlake community, 8 miles on the George Price Highway, picked up a first offense for drug possession and was fined in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court this week.

Deon Flowers appeared in court on Monday, charged with possession of a controlled drug for 14.7 grams of marijuana that police found on him during a stop and search.

The court, taking into consideration that Flowers had no prior convictions, fined him $300, plus $5 cost of court.

Flowers has until September 30 to pay his fine or face three months in jail.

Police conducting mobile patrols in the community on Saturday, July 23, say their attention was drawn to Flowers because he was acting suspiciously. When they searched him, they found the marijuana in his pants pocket. Under the amendment to the 2017 amendment to the Misuse of Drugs Act Chapter 103 of the Laws of Belize, a person can legally carry up to 10 grams of marijuana without facing criminal sanctions.
