By Aaron Humes: The Ethics and Integrity Committee of the United Democratic Party (UDP) has announced a year-long expulsion of Delroy Cuthkelvin, a former member of its central executive, for “violating the Party Constitution with his sustained public bombardment of attacks on the Party.”
In a statement, the party charged that Cuthkelvin “has crossed the line of healthy freedom of expression and dissent to becoming an agent of destruction that serves the agenda of the People’s United Party.” It added that it will not tolerate what it calls “divisive, destructive actions by those that wish to undermine unity and bring the UDP into disrepute,” as it seeks to rebuild.
It calls on members to be strong in Opposition, defend the national democracy and advocate on behalf of the Belizean people as their “Government-in-waiting.”
Cuthkelvin has refused to appear before the Committee to explain himself, instead writing chairman Aldo Salazar to demand that it attend to disciplinary proceedings called for by members against former leader and stalwart John Saldivar. He has not responded publicly to the party’s announcement.
