Audubon closes Tiger Fern Trail following hiker’s cliff fall death

Posted: Wednesday, July 27, 2022. 8:59 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: A statement from co-managers of the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary (CBWS), the Belize Audubon Society (BAS), has announced the closure of the trail from which 35-year-old Lucero Aguirre fell and was mortally injured on Tuesday.

The Tiger Fern Trail as it is called will be closed until further notice as BAS conducts its internal assessment of all trails within the Sanctuary. BAS says it is also cooperating with the police investigation now underway.

The society says its trained personnel responded almost immediately to provide aid to Aguirre after receiving word of the accident around 8:30 in the morning. They tended to her until the arrival of the Southern Emergency Service (SES) paramedic team from Hopkins and assisted the paramedics in transferring Aguirre to the ambulance via a basket stretcher. She was declared dead on arrival at the Southern Regional Hospital in Dangriga.

Audubon has expressed its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the late Lucero Aguirre.
